Becoming a Cadet Member is a fairly easy process.
Welcome to Squadron 126. We are glad you are interested in joining our squadron as a member of the national organization known as Civil Air Patrol, or CAP.
Here is a collection of the information that we think is critical for you to know in considering whether to join/have your child join CAP.
Cadet Program: The cadet program includes learning and testing in leadership, emergency services, drill and ceremony, customs and courtesy, chain of command, and memory work such as the Cadet Oath, and Aerospace Education modules. To promote, a cadet must be actively attending squadron meetings and additional activities outside the squadron as well as studying and passing written tests on leadership and aerospace education. Memory work must be known for promotions as well. Physical training, known as PT, takes place once a month. There are standards for PT for promotions.
All recruits are required to attend at least 3 meetings before deciding whether to join CAP. As soon as your first meeting, however, a membership application and other information is available to you so that you can make an informed decision. On or after the 3rd meeting, a recruit may request to have a Membership Review Board. In order for this meeting to take place, the recruit should be certain that he or she wants to join CAP and have the items listed below, turned into the Recruiting Officer. If all items are correct and complete, the Recruiting Officer will recommend a Membership Review Board to the Deputy Commander for Cadets.
Items to turn in and have reviewed by the Recruiting Officer include:
- Two Copies of a completed application which is legible and signed by the cadet and his/her parents. Incomplete applications will result in a delay of membership.
- One check made payable to Civil Air Patrol in the amount of $40.00. Indicate the name of the recruit in the memo section of the check.
- One check made payable to Civil Air Patrol in the amount of $20.00. Indicate the name of the recruit in the memo section of the check.
- 2 letters of recommendation from individuals other than family members
- A copy of recent report card indicating GPA of 2.0 or better
If a recruit is recommended to join, the cadet staff will try to notify him or her shortly after the meeting. The paperwork will be sent to CAP Headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and the recruit’s CAP ID number will be posted on the national web site.
From the time a CAP ID is issued, the recruit is an official member of CAP and may fully participate in activities. A manual with modules on Leadership and Aerospace will be sent to the home address of the new cadet within 4 – 8 weeks. The new cadet will receive a CAP ID card within about the same time period. The new cadet should always carry this ID with him or her at CAP activities.
An important consideration for anyone considering whether to join CAP is the grooming standards.
For males, the hair must be neatly combed, no longer than one inch in length on the top of the head and not touching the ears; fad hairstyles are against regulations. Facial hair is not permitted for Cadets
For females, the hair must be neatly combed back into a bun at the nape of the neck; hair is to be styled with products to keep it from coming lose or having stray or fly away hair. This is not a comprehensive list but gives a recruit an idea of the standards. Colognes are not worn by male or female cadets.
A recruit should talk to a flight commander regarding any questions he or she has on grooming standards. Grooming standards at Squadron 126 will be strictly enforced.
The wearing of a uniform is a serious matter in the organization of CAP. Standards for the uniform and for grooming must be met and maintained to have the privilege of wearing the uniform. Please read this information very carefully. Wearing a CAP uniform is a privilege reserved for members. No one is to wear a uniform that has not been approved for membership.
What to wear to squadron meetings as a Recruit:
The correct attire for a recruit is jeans and a black T-shirt, with no writing or logos. As you attend the squadron, the willingness you demonstrate to conform to uniform standards right from the beginning is an important aspect in judging your overall readiness for the CAP cadet program.
DO NOT buy or wear a uniform unless or until you have been formally offered to join Civil Air Patrol. The process of membership will be explained in this information.
WHAT TO WEAR AS A MEMBER OF CAP:
Once you/your child is approved for membership in CAP, you may purchase and wear your uniform, BUT only if worn properly. The following information is to inform you on the types of uniforms, where they can be obtained and details about how the uniform is to be worn, where the patches are to be placed and even where CREASES are to be pressed. There are two uniforms and one type of attire which will be explained. There are BDU’s, Dress Blues and PT or Physical Training Attire. Cadets are expected to wear the proper uniform or attire at the proper time.
Any uniform should be absolutely spotless and flawless. No lose threads, no soiling, and it should be ironed and neatly pressed. Creases are to be razor sharp and in the right location.
One type of uniform which is worn two meetings a month is the BDU which stands for Battle Dress Utility in the Woodland pattern. This uniform is also worn to many CAP activities.
- The sleeves are to be ironed and pressed so that the crease runs from the front of the shoulder seam down the length of the arm. Please have a cadet flight commander show you the placement of this seam. It is important to get this right,
- The California Wing Patch has very specific placement in relation to this seam. Please see a cadet flight commander to show you the correct placement.
- The Squadron Patch is worn centered on the right breast pocket centered below the flap and the lower edge. The pocket, must remain serviceable.
- The trousers are to be ironed with a crease running down the front and back of the legs in the center.
- The name tape is to be placed on the right of the BDU Blouse (it’s the shirt, but it is called a blouse.) When we say on the right, it is on the right of the cadet who is wearing it. Looking at the cadet in front of you, the tape would go on your left. Opposite the name tape belongs the Civil Air Patrol tape.
- Boots, belt, black t-shirt, blousing bands for the trousers, socks and a cover or hat, make the complete BDU uniform.
The Dress Blues Uniform
This uniform is worn one meeting per month and at certain CAP activities. This uniform consists of shirt or blouse, slacks or skirt, belt, shoes which are to be either patent leather or highly shined leather; men are to wear either an “A-shirt” or “Y-neck T-shirt” beneath their dress shirt. The Blue Nameplate is worn with this uniform immediately above the right shirt pocket. Ribbons are worn above the left pocket.
A blue Flight Cap with the Cadet Cap Badge is worn
Ribbon, Cut Outs. Metal Grade: Additional items such as but not limited to these are required to complete the uniforms. Discuss any questions on the uniform with a flight commander.
Coming To Visit
If you believe you have what it takes to be a cadet, the next step is to arrange to visit and spend at least one meeting with us. During this meeting the Recruiting Officer will be able to answer any questions you might have. It’s important to note that at this meeting, you can only observe the other cadets and participate in a limited way until you become a member.
